Felix asked about the Katzenjammer Kids. Here's some background from the
King Features website. If you go to the site you can see an example of the
strip.
"Rudolph Dirks created The Katzenjammer Kids in 1897 for the American
Humorist, the famed Sunday supplement of the New York Journal. Inspired in
part by Max Und Moritz, the famous German children's stories of the 1860s,
The Katzenjammer Kids featured the adventures of Hans and Fritz, twins and
fellow warriors in the battle against any form of authority. "The Katzies"
rebelled against Mama (their own mother, of course), der Captain (the
shipwrecked sailor who acted as their surrogate father) and der Inspector
(dreaded representative of the school authorities).
The oldest comic strip still in syndication, The Katzenjammer Kids was
adapted to the stage in 1903 and inspired countless animated cartoons. Today
the feature is drawn by Hy Eisman. The U.S. Postal Service also saluted the
Katzies with a commemorative stamp."

Hello everyone
Felix asks how katzenjammer came about. Don't know the answer to that but I
do know that when we arrived in Australia in 1949 I was charmed by a comic
strip called the Katzenjammer Kids which was printed in one of the Sunday
papers. I could vaguely follow the twisted, German style English in the
dialogue and puzzled as to why, in this strange English speaking country,
they could have such an obviously foreign thing, full of chaos and mayhem.
Was this a syndicated comic strip from the USA?

Kater studentenwoord
sedert 1850<hd. Katarrh<medisch lat. Catarrhus<gr. Katarrhoos "Het
omlaagvloeien"(van slijm uit het hoofd).
Mar ja, dat he'k ok a'k mien heufd deur een verkoldheid dichte hebbe zitten,
uut.
Gluck, gluck. gluck, gluck!
Liebliche shöne!
Zaubrische töne,
Und sie verstehet der Mohr und Kalmuck!
Mancher vertändelt mit weibern sein leben
Höfelt und härmet und schmachtet sich krank,
Denn auch den rosigsten lippen entschweben
Oft genug grillen und launen und zank.
Gluck, gluck, gluck!
Spricht nur die schöne,
Welcher ich fröhne,
Und sie begeheret nicht kleider nog schmuck.
Wen sich das schicksal, mit wettern gerüstet,
Wider mich frohen gesellen erbost,
Und mir den garten der freude verwüstet,
Dan ist das fläschlein mein kräftigster trost.
Gluck, gluck. gluck, gluck!
Gluck, gluck. gluck, gluck!
Dich muss ich missen?
Dorthin gerissen,
Gluck, gluck. gluck, gluck!
Klingt es dort wieder,
himmlische brüder,
reichen mir einen verjüngenden schluck!
Goodgaon, Arend Victorie.
