Hi all,

Thanks, Paul, for the premature birthday wish. It is good to see sincerity
in an otherwise insincere world.
You know, I cannot vouch for a ship's canon at the Union Buildings possibly
dating from before 1806, (when the British annexed the Cape of Good Hope),
not having had an inscription in Dutch when you saw it.

South Africa's national motto was "Eendracht maakt macht" as from 1910 and I
guess the Dutch inscription was retained on that specific building in
Pretoria, possibly for historical reasons.

I knew "Eendrag maak mag", "Ex unitate vires" and after 1961, "Ex pluribus
unum" and "Ex unitate virus".

Since 27 April 2000, the national motto is: "!ke e: |xarra ?ke" ('diverse
people unite') in the extinct Khoisan language of the |Xam people, although
it is not known whether the phrase would have been idiomatic in the
language.
