Subject: Anniversary
Dear Lowlanders,
Some of you may have noticed that our anniversary site
(http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/) has been quietly growing -- mostly with the
help of non-members. It's time for the rest of you to swing into action before
our 12th anniversary in May 2007.
There are some very interesting additions. For instance, there's now a version
in Philippine English:
http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/english-philippines.php
There are also versions in Philippine Spanish and in two varieties of Chabacano,
the only Spanish-based creole of Asia:

Thanks to Dante Ferry (http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/feature_dante.php),
there's now a very impressive lineup of language varieties used in and around the
Philippines:
http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/philippines.php
Particularly impressive is that Dante managed to obtain translations into two
languages of which samples are very difficult to get. One is Tausug, used
primarily by Muslim people of the Philippines' Sulu Archipelago and in
neighboring Sabah (Malaysia) on Borneo Island. The other one, even more elusive,
is the Balanguingui variety of the Sama language (Sama-Bajau group) used by
primarily Muslim maritime nomads ("Sea Gypsies") and their descendants (some of
which are now sedentary) in various coastal regions of the Sulu and Sulawesi
(Celebes) Seas, namely in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Composed by a native speaker, the Balanguingui Sama translation may well be the
only sample of this variety, if not in any Sama variety, on the Web at this time.
Please note that each translation comes with a link to a page that introduces the
language ("Language information").
Please also note also that our anniversary presentation is very well visited and
has a real following (i.e., regular repeat visitors).
Please send your translations, audio files, pictures, comments and suggestions to
me ([sassisch at yahoo.com]).
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
