Dat keem in ole Tid so wiet, dat de ollen Greeken er linke Hannen
aristera nomen deen. Up Dütsch heet dat "de beter (Han)". Man dat wer ni
er beter Han. Se nomt so blots so, dat se "links" ni seggen mütt.
"Links" wer so leeg een Woor, dat wullen se ni seggen.

Wat dat mit de Wapen angeiht, dat wiest sik ok jümmer noch an de Art,
woans de Lü in de katholsche Kark beden don. Se hollen de Hannen tohoop,
un er Fingers wiesen in de Richt na'n Heben. Düsse Art kumt vun de ollen
Franken. Dat wer, wenn keen von sien Baas wat to kregen harr, denn full
he op sien Kneen, heel de Hannen tohoop und wies na sien Baas, dat de
wiss wer, he keem ohn Wapen.

Meaning that "right" is "good" and "left" is "bad," perhaps in all cultures,
probably because the majority of people are right-handed.

I also wrote that when I was a child I used to be told to give people my "good
hand" and also eat with it, as opposed to the "bad" left hand.

In the meantime it came back to me that besides German _schlecht_ and Low Saxon
_slecht_ or _leyg'_ for "bad" in reference to the left hand it tended to be more
often _böse_ (Low Saxon _böös'_, Hamburg dialect _beus_ [bO.Is]) in child's
language, which can mean 'angry', 'mean', 'evil', 'very bad' or 'naughty (of a
child's behavior)'.  I guess it's similar to Dutch _kwaad_, or saying "naughty
hand" in non-American English. Once in a while it would be _eische Hand_ in Low
Saxon and Missingsch.  _Eisch_, too, means 'naughty', apparently derived from the
exclamation _ei!_ [?aI] to express dismay, plus adjectival/adverbial _-sch_ which
is related to English _-ish_ and German _-isch_.

We children had to be careful to give people the "good" hand in greeting,
sometimes also referred to as _liebe Hand_ or _nette Hand_ in childish German,
namely the "lovely," "dear," "nice" or "friendly" hand.  On top of it, we boys
had to do a _Diener_ (literally 'servant'), which is to bow.  Girls had to do a
_Knicks_, namely to drop a curtsy.

Them were the formal days ...
