Pat, This isn't a song but part of a poem that I am searching for.
It was in a compilation we used in school many years ago and although I can
remember the first and last bits the middle escapes my memory.

It was quite tongue-in-cheek and described all sorts of English houses.
Being a passionate lover of houses with history and character, I loved the
poem and still get enjoyment quoting the beginning and end to myself even
though I cannot recall the descriptions of houses.
I can't remember the author either!!
Anyone out there help?

"When my ship comes in
As it's sure to come
I'll follow no poet to Innesfree
For I don't much care for the honey bee's hum
And a clay wattle cabin is not for me.

No! I'll say farewell to the life of a clerk
And a third floor lodging in Battersea Park
I'll pack my satchel
And oil my bike
And ride till I find a house I like.

......
....
And when 'tis done
'Twill be my care
To find the fair
The chaste
The inexpensive She
Who will help to make the two ends meet
By darning in a low arm-chair
And letting the lamplight gently beat
In the good old way upon her hair.

Heather
