Dear Lowlanders,

Yesterday I wrote regarding our Travels website (lowlands-l.net/travels/):

Please check the language guide:

Basic Phrases: lowlands-l.net/travels/phrases.php
Basic Vocabulary (accompanying the phrases):
lowlands-l.net/travels/words.php
Basic Number Words: lowlands-l.net/travels/numbers.php

We still need these guides for Afrikaans, Dutch, Limburgish and Scots, at
the very least. Other varieties of Low Saxon would be nice.  Please write to
me if you volunteer for these, because I would like to avoid duplication of
effort. (Someone already volunteered for Frisian.)

Please remember that these are meant to be practical survival guides for
people traveling in Lowlands-relevant areas (which includes transplanted
language and culture as well as colonial sites).  For this reason it would
be very nice if we had such guides also for Danish, Estonian, French
(Belgium, France, Quebec), Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay,
Norwegian, Polish (Northern Poland), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian
(Kaliningrad, Russia proper, Ukraine), Spanish (Latin America) and Swedish.
Kashubian and Walloon would be nice, too, as would be Bislama, Papiamentu,
Sranan and Tok Pisin.  As Elsie suggested, guides for Southern Africa's
Nguni languages would be handy also.  I further suggest basic comparative
lists of American, Australian, British, New Zealand and South African
English where terms and expressions differ.  Guides to Indian, Malaysian,
Singaporean and Hong Kong English would be great too.  I'm also fancying a
list of special expressions in (Low-Saxon-influenced) Northern German
compared with "neutral" Standard German.

In the meantime, our new friend Jan Paulus of Dronten, Flevoland
(Netherlands), came up with the Dutch versions of these.  Thanks a lot, Jan,
and welcome!

During the coming week or two I'll add audio versions for German and Low
Saxon.

As for articles, people, don't think in grandiose terms so you get
intimidated and overwhelmed!  Little snippets will do.  Use your imagination
and remember that there are Lowlands-related things everywhere, not only in
the geographic Lowlands. I bet each and every one of you could come up at
least with one travel recommendation anywhere in the world.  For example,
our Brazilian friends or people that traveled to Brazil could write about
the Pomeranian communities in the south or about the Dutch colonial remnants
in and around Recife.  With regard to Argentina, you could write something
about the long-established Anglo-Argentinian community and where you can see
or even meet some of its members. Those of you that live in or have been to
Spain could point out historic sites of museums that deal with
Spanish-Flemish relations, for instance.  Surely some of you could tell us
about gathering places in which you hear people talk and sing in Scots, or
where in England you can get a good taste of local traditions.  Virtually
all of you could tell us where in the world you find good Dutch, Flemish,
British, American and North German paintings exhibited or can visit Dutch or
British colonial sites, or remnants of Hanseatic settlements.  And I am not
even talking about the physical Lowlands here.  Just imagine you meet
someone who wants to visit your countries or regions and asks you for
insiders' tips about routes, sites, places to stay, what to eat, what to
see, what to do, what not to do ... anything that seems special to you.  And
write it down and send it to us.
