Subject: song
Dear Lowlanders,
A friend of mine is looking for an English song about birches and bevers.
She reminds only:
Land of the silver birch/home of the bever.
Does anybody know this song and things around it, like origin etc?

Hoi, Rikus!
It's easily googled when "beaver" is spelled correctly.
Here are the words and the tune in Midi format:
http://members.shaw.ca/tunebook/birch.htm
Here's a choral renditions in MP3 format:
http://folkbrigade.ca/Sounds/M3U/SilverBirch.m3u
Not much seems to be known about the song except that it began in the 1930s
and is particularly popular among Canadian boy and girl scouts.
I believe the composer deliberately made the tune sound somewhat
"Indianesque."
Here the words:
Land of the silver birch,
Home of the beaver
Where still the mighty moose
Wanders at will
*Refrain:*
Blue lake and rocky shore,
I will return once more
Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, Boom-diddy-ah-da, bo-oo-oom
My heart is sick for you,
Here in the lowlands,
I will return to you,
Hills of the north
*Refrain* Swift as the silver fish,
Canoe of birch bark
Thy mighty waterways
Carry me forth
*Refrain* Here where the blue lake lies,
I'll set my wigwam
Close to the water's edge,
Silent and still
*Refrain*Regards, and say hi to your friend!
Reinhard/Ron
