So...just out of curiosity, what is the German name for Aachen? I seem to
recall seeing that on road signs in Koeln, but I could be mistaken.
Paul Finlow-Bates (who also hadn't realised that "Aix-la-Chapelle" and
"Aachen" were the same place!!)

It's *Aachen*, Paul. It's *Aken *in Dutch and *Oche *in the local Ripuarian
dialects.
Apparently, in English there's now a tendency toward "Aachen".

Now all I have to do is find out more about the local Ripuarian dialects.
It's a maze, this language business; every answer creates 10 more questions.
