That is very true in Ireland, where northerners will emphasise their accent
and use dialectal words when dealing with Southerners. The reverse is true
with the Gammon of the Irish Traveller population. As with most Romany and
romanyesque populations, they speak common english with the common accent to
the outsiders - you and me - and revert to their own dialect with
corresponding strong accent among their own.
