Subject: LL-L "Grammar" 2007.09.12 (05) [E]
Hi, I'm Gloria from the Southeastern U.S.
Consider "bat" as a root concept in English. My simple little
dictionary suggests a Celtic origin for this concept, although the entry
for "battery" reads etmylogically as Gary Davenport posted.
If "bat" were a root concept, then what might it mean? For me, it
means repeatedly hitting something with what I usually think of as a side
arm approach to the hitting, like cats do, or American baseball does. I
think of "batting," a term for the stuffing of quilts or a term used for
housing insulation here and I wonder how it was originally created from
cotton or wool then extended to fiberglass. And I thought of "batten" which
I think of as securing in place, protecting against a storm. Then "batter"
like cake batter, and I think of the motion that a person does when they mix
it. Which can mean, associated with "bat" or one that does "bat," like
"teacher."
And then I think again of "bat." What is it really? Is it the hitting? Is
it the array of strokes? or is it this with an end? For me it is that
hitting, in an arrayed pattern, but to a purpose, maybe to keep something
strong at bay, like even hunger or cold. In terms of "battle", a place with
weapons or soldiers combine power and array would be a "bat+ter+y". A power
store. And in this logic, the "-y" is a place designation, like "nursery"
or "pharmacy." Well, anyhow, I'm all about English roots these days, and
somehow "bat" just did't sound like a Latin derived thing, particularly when
English contains other "Consonant + -at" words, like "mat" "fat" "rat"
"tat", but who knows.
well, thanks, and hello
gloria
