It has always been quite popular in England, traditionally associated with
the Northern English working class, though it certainly has followers in
other areas and other social groups.

And in Scotland where keeping non-racing pigeons was also a popular working
class pastime.
Known as "Doos" they were keptin a "Dookit". Great game was luring other
people'spassing doos down to the landing roost,
trapping them. and adding to the collection.

The recovery of the peregrine falcon from the brink of extinction has led to
some fanciers actually calling for a return to the persecution!

During WW2 carrier pigeons were succesfully used by the British to pass
coded messages toagents and Resistance membets in Occupied
territories. The Germans therefore employed falcons on their side of the
Channel to kill pigeons flying over in attempot to stop the practise.
