Oh, Paul, is the Pope an atheist? Funny, I never knew ;-)
But I can't help noticing how he says it more than what he says, too, and
that's not least because of his accent.
Reinhard e.a., is a typical Yiddish accent very different from a typical
German accent in American English, given that the two languages are very
close? Even Israeli Hebrew seems to have taken over that accent…

Ingmar,

There are many kinds of Yiddish accents, depending mostly on the Yiddish
dialect a person speaks. None, however, sounds like a Modern "Western"
German accent. The reason for this is that Modern (Eastern) Yiddish
phonology is very different, having been strongly influenced by the
surrounding languages, most of them being Slavic, others Baltic, and then
there are Hungarian (Ugric) and Romanian (Romance).

In the video to which I link below you can hear a lady talk American English
with a strong Romanian ("Bessarabian," i.e. Moldovan) Yiddish accent.

It happens to be an interesting video dealing with post-war survival of
Yiddish, also mentioning persecution of Yiddish promoters in Israel's early
years.
