Diederik wrote: And dictionary.reference.com lists both "misspelt" and
"misspelled", so which one is 'incorrect' then? And why is it in the
dictionary if it's not accepted.
Strangely enough this appeared as a question for A level English in
yesterday's Telegraph: which is the correct spelling?: misspelt: mispelled:
misspelled
I have to say I took a second look because I agree with Diederik - both
misspelt and misspelled are as acceptable as spelt and spelled or learnt
and learned.
The pair I like to chase up / follow / observe is 'lighted' and 'lit'. All
printed matter / books post 1940s ( well nearly all) have 'lighted' but few
people use that; rather they say 'lit'. You can often hear a second's
confusion when someone is reading a script on the radio and they know their
internal ear wants to hear 'lit' but their eyes are looking at 'lighted'.
Oh how slowly do some changes take to reinforce themselves!

Aha! But, Heather and Diederik, now you've crossed over from orthography to
morphology, or grammar more generally.
"Lighted" and "lit" are possible variants, usually in dialectical
distribution, as are "misspelt" and "misspelled", and "learnt" and "learned"
(not to mention "learned" with the "e" before "d" pronounced).
There are quite a few other cases like this; e.g., "dreamt" ~ "dreamed",
"burnt" ~ "burned", "clove" ~ "cleft", "cloved" ~ "clave", "leapt" ~
"leaped", "stove" ~ "staved", more recently with American alternatives such
as "sneaked" ~ "snuck", and "shat" ~ "shit".
As far as I know, they are all pronounced differently, so it's not a matter
of spelling.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
