Subject: LL-L "Language use" 2008.08.23 (01) [E]
Dear Ron, Lowlanders,
I don't know if you will allow a purely gut reaction to the ORTHOGRAPHY
thread of Heather and Sandy. One thing was that I always spelled by the
book, even when little. The other thing was I couldn't stand anybody telling
me how to speak English, because that was my language, already. All I needed
was my father's (the Methodist preacher's) precise, stentorian tones as a
model, although I didn't recognize it at the time.
In sixth grade, Miss Pitkin taught me to diagram sentences--the only time I
thought any of them taught me anything
Later, in high school, I hated the English teachers and their failure to
inspire me with the content of literature, or to write much of anything.
Accordingly in college I studied a lot of literature: English, Spanish,
German, Bible (about 80% lit and with many connections made to the Greek and
Hebrew originals I never studied). German was the only language, whose
grammar I studied in university.
Also *spelt *can a kind of wheat; *smelt* can be to process ores or a fish
which seems on the way to extinction.
Jorge Potter
