There is a Twitten in Blaby in Leicestershire

From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at yahoo.com>
Subject: Etymology
"Twitten" is listed in the English Wikipedia:
*Twitten* is an old dialect <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialect> word,
used in both East <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Sussex> and West
Sussex<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Sussex>,
for a path or alleyway <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alley>, which is still
in common use.[1] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitten#cite_note-0> The
word is also in common use in the London residential area known as Hampstead
Garden Suburb.
Elsewhere in the country, such alleyways are termed
*chares<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chare>
* (north-east England <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North-east_England>), *
opes* (Plymouth), *jiggers* (Liverpool<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverpool>)
and *snickelways <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickelways>*
(York<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York>
).
For "chare" read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chare
For "snickelway" read here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickelways
The picture of the snickelway you see there might as well be that of a *
Twiete* in old-time Hamburg.
I assume that "snickel" started off as a frequentive form of a cognate of
"sneak".
The German Wikipedia mentions "Twiete":
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twiete
Not all that many true "Twieten" are left in Hamburg. Many have retained the
name but have become "proper" streets, and others were destroyed during WWII
carpet bombing.
Please let me emphasize that "Twieten" are not exclusive to Hamburg. They
can be found in much of Sleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and in parts of the
Westphalian area as well. I am not sure about other regions.
"Twete" (*tweyte*) is an alternative form.
Here you can see the closed-in entrance to a "Twiete" from a street:

Most of them are no longer closed in but have been made into
pedestrians-only alleyways; e.g.
