Hallo,

I don't know. But the question is a good one, and a
very legitimate one.

Two points.
Concerning Viking invasions: the Church was poking
around a lot in these matters. And clerical sources
have been telling about Viking raids and slaughters
that the clerics invented themselves, and then
lamented [And Machiavelli had still to come.]

Concerning the great Germanic Migration: if this
migration was accompanied by big scale raids and
slaughters [instead of fusing races], then there have
to be a handed-over story telling to lament these
migrations on a large scale.
