Beste Ron,
You wrote:
I don't think that Hagen ~ Haan ~ Hahn as a surname carried any negative
connotations, and I don't only say this because it's close to home. I
believe that originally it referred to a settler by or with a haw (enclosed
land). The negative stuff our Luc dredged up surely came later, or so I like
to think.
Rest assured, I didn't mean to give you a bad name Ron...not at all.
Something just struck me when I consulted:
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=hedge
After reading the article, I tried to back up the assertion with some
evidence I found in old dictionaries...nothing more and nothing less.
Kind greetings,
Luc Hellinckx
PS: Since you mentioned Eastern Prussia earlier on, I'd like to mention that
today I met a student from Kaliningrad in my school. He claims that
"Germanistan" is simply "buying" Kaliningrad these days.

Thanks, Luc.

Oh, I was quite aware of that, Luc! I was just jesting (again ...), about
myself, incorrigible that I am.

Hmm ... Trying to buy it back then?
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
