We played it in our community, but there were no Appalachians around--just
Ostfriesland descendants and a couple of green Irish.

Yes, we did the same thing when I was a child in the 1960s Pacific
Nortdhwest. I've seen kids play the game with dandelions in Idaho,
Washington and Alaska.

We did that in our family in Los Angeles in the 1940's, using dandelions, as
we had no buttercups. I suppose we brought it from Appalachia in the 20's.
I've never heard anyone else mention it until now.

In Scotland young children played a game in which one kid would pick a
butter cup,
say "Lit me see whither Ye like buh/ur" as he held it below the other's
chin.
The yellow reflection confirmed they did.
Wonder if they do this nowadays ? We had simple pleasures in the 1940's.
