This is also cognate with 'chattels' and come from med Latin 'capitale'
meaning moveable wealth.

So you get a wonderful series of interlinked words where in German Vieh
means 'cattle' but nowadays in English 'fee' only means 'money to be paid
for a service'. Whereas English 'cattle' originally meant assessable taxable
moveable property i.e. chattels and Latin pecunia meant money having been
derived from pecu = cattle
