Subject: Language varieties

Helge *et al.*,

Here's a quick postscript regarding my comments about language variety
labeling, because in rereading it I discovered what might be seen as a
contradiction.

I said that I consider all varieties to the south "German," but I also said
that I advise against using broad, national-sounding labels.

What I really mean is that such labels ought to be avoided in tricky
situations such as that of the meeting place of Low Franconian, Low Saxon
and Central Franconian (incl. Ripuarian) as well as of political borders
(between Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany).
