Sandy asked: I suppose it has to be asked, where does the town of Basildon
in Essex, England, fit into all this?  Presumably the "don" means an upland
region or hill, leaving "Basil" to be explained.

According to Ekwall ( ODEPN) Basildon was originally Bastlesden where the
Bastle maybe derived from OE* Bessel a derivitaive of Bassa. The genitive of
this would give Bessles and from this Bastles /  Bestles. There was also a
Bestlesford nearby. the 'den' OE denu = valley

But this is Basildon Berkshire!

Basildon in Essex was apparently Berlesduna / Berthlesdon / Bartlesden  from
Beorhtel's or Beorhtwulf's dun

So no Basils here to add to this thread..... which has surprised me as I
have only ever heard it being pronounced Bazzle - name and herb.   The sound
BAYSLE would be the word 'basal'  i.e. of the base to my ears.
