Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2008.05.23 (03) [E]
Dear Lowlanders,
Something that's been puzzling me for a couple of years now.
Around the town of Bridgwater in Somerset, England, there are a few
villages with "zoy" in the name: Chedzoy, Middlezoy, Westonzoyland.
Has anybody any suggestions about what the "zoy" could mean?
While on the subject of place names, we had a discussion some time ago
about the preponderance of town names ending with "-by" in Yorkshire and
other areas of the north of England. I suggested that these occur in
Scotland too, but there's some indirection due to the Scots spelling
"-bie". The only place I could think of was "Humbie", but now I'd like
to add "Lockerbie" and "Canonbie". So it does seem to be a phenomenon
rather than an isolated instance!
