Subject: LL-L Language varieties
Hi guys, I'm back home.
Thanks for the comments regarding e-mailing.
I just would like to add a few things as regarding language use and
varieties.
1 - In the Waikiki tourist area of Honolulu *Japanese* is predominant.
In the Sheraton Waikiki most indications and shops are bilingual
English-Japanese,
some local shops are Japanese only.
2 - I could very hardly find a sound recording in local *Pidgin*;
It is considered somehow locally as a non-language.
Some books are just on the level of telling of jokes (es e.g. Peppo's "To Da
Max series", Tonouchi's "Da Kine Dictionary" etc.).
In the Barnes & Noble they said there exists a audio recording of the bible
in Pidgin,
but I couldn'd find it anywhere.
The printed form was not so difficult to find:
Da Jesus Book, Hawaii Pidgin New Testament, 2000, 6th printing 2006, Wycliff
Bible Translations, Orlando, vii + 744 pp, ISBN 0-938978-21-7, USD 14.95
A sample:

The only recording I found was a cabaret-type CD by Rap Reiplinger,: "Poi
Dog with Crabs", The Mountain Apple Cy, Honolulu, bar code 7-61268-2020-2
Here is Track 02 as a sample:

3 - as to *Hawaiian* here is a recording with text:
http://www.euro-support.be/temp/wight56.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/temp/wight58.jpg
http://www.euro-support.be/temp/molokai.wma
It comes from
Kahikahealani Wight, Learn Hawaiian at Home, Bess Press, Honolulu, 147 pp +
2 audio CDs, 1992, 2005, ISBN 1-57306-245-6, USD 24.95
The recording is a cut of the last 4 min of the 15 min track 5 of the first
CD (going with chapter 4).
Copyrights may apply, so I leave the urls active for a few days only,
Regards,
Roger

Thanks a lot, Roger. Good to have you back home.
The Young Kanakas clip is hilarious. (

The Kahuna is still smiling because of the textbook you mentioned.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
