Beste Lowlanners,
just I've made my dogwalk (or, as Heather likes it, 'digwalk' *s*) at which
I'm forced to cross a pasture with sheep.
Being careful not to scare them (it was already nearly dark) I wanted
to make them alert. Without giving it a moments thought I shouted with low
voice "Limmilimmilimmi...", as it is usual in our dialect to call and
allure sheep.
On my further way home I made some meditations about the special, but
species-bound kind of calling animals and decided to let you take part in
those, at a dark November night on the northern hemisphere...;-)
Trying to use the English sound scheme I'd like to describe it thus:
*for chickens* we shout "Tikka-tikka-tikkaaa..."*(*)* (BTW: an egg also was
called 'Tikk-Ei' by our grandma);
*for ducks and geese* "Weele-weele-weeleeee..." (imitating the call of the
young goslings);
*for swine* "Kumme-kumme-kumme..." ("come, come, come [?]")
*for cows* "Koy-oltsch-koy..." ("come [or: cows], old [girl], come") or
just "Koye-koye-koye" ("cowies, cowies,cowies");
*for calves* "kishi-kishi-kishi" ('Kischi' being also the nickname for
a calf/young piece of cattle);
*for cats* "Meatze, meatze, meatze..." ('Mieze' being the German nickname
for cats; I presume it to mean 'mice-[catcher]').
Horses and dogs have individual names or are called by whistling.
I'd enjoy to hear all the different ways how other (Low-)Landers use to call
their animals.
[*(*)* I've also heard 'Toukky-toukky-toukky...", and a 'stupid girl' in LS,
also in G, is called 'Tukke'. This strongly reminds me to E 'duck'! Could
there be an archaic relation??? Always on the scout ;-)!]
Allerbest; have a nice weekend, alltogether!
Jonny Meibohm
