Hi Almal,



Regarding acceptance when speaking to people in their own language, I
haven't had that problem in Germany or Austria - but that's because,
apparently I have a "strange" accent.  I first learned German at school, but
left it behind, learning Afrikaans in South Africa and dabbling with
Scandinavian languages.  I returned to serious German study relatively
recently. As a result, they know I'm a foreigner, but they can't work out
what kind, so everybody keeps on with German even when I struggle, as they
can't decide what to switch to!



So my advice is, if you can't speak like a native, talk funny!

Mensen, mensen, mensen!

Jullie hebben natuurlijk het grootste gelijk van de wereld.

Maar voeg er onderhand eens aan toe dat dit allemaal wel geldt voor een
bepaald soort cafe's en derg.

Vaste bezoekers van cafe's in de Amsterdamse binnenstad hebben een grote
ervaring met buitenlanders die zo trots zijn op hun nederlands en die dat zo
graag willen uitproberen, dat je constant geen cafebezoeker kunt zijn, maar
de rol van docent nederlands opgedrongen krijgt.

[Iets dat je in Waddemastinputteradeel nooit zal overkomen.]

En dan moet je ook verdragen dat bijv. een Amerikaan die in Amerika
nederlands heeft geleerd graag over geldzaken praat en uitkraait: Ja, zo
gewonnen zo geronnen. [zondigen tegen register-gebruik.]



En als de nederlandse intonatie wat anders klinkt, weet de cafebezoeker al
gauw dat het weer om een buitenlander gaat, voor men goed heeft laten
doordringen wat er aan de hand is.



Tja, een heropvoedingscursus zal wel niet helpen.

Het enige dat erop zit, is: andere contacten zoeken.
