Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2008
Hello Ron, Mark, Arend, Wim, Marcus, Jonny and Lowlanders.
Ron notes:
English has a liquid measure called "quart".
The original term for a bottle of wine in England was a "Reputed Quart"
(which was less than a standard quart) before the international standard
750ml bottle was introduced.
Wim said..
It reminds me of the Dutch saying: ik heb mijn laatste oortje versnoept"
Oortje here being a coin.
This is interesting because the Norwegians used "Ort" as a measure of weight
equal to 0.9735grams and also as money (4 Ort equals 1 riksdaler).
The Swedish also use "Ort" as a measure of weight (1 ort equals 4.25gram)
Regards
Peter Snepvangers
