Een kort tijd geleden bracht ik twee weken in Nederland door.  Ik bleef in
kleine dorpen en stedjes (Egchel in Limburg, Mill in Brabant, Eenrum in
Groningen, Zwaag in West Friesland, o.a.) en besteed de meeste van mijn tijd
met boeren in hun zeventig jaren.  Dus begon ik verschillende dialecten wat
beter te verstaan.  Op mijn laatste dag toen ik in Schiphol zat te wachten,
zat ik naast een familie en ik kon hun taal redelijk goed volgen, maar niet
herkennen.  Ik vroeg hun wat voor dialect dat was en ze zeiden "Fries".
Nou, je kunt je goed voorstellen dat ik daar heel blij was, een beetje Fries
ook te kunnen verstaan, he.

But now that I am back home in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my "taal knobbel"
seems to be slipping away again.  Jammer.

Friese Van Dale voor schoolkinderen

FERWERT - Kinderen uit groep 2 van alle basisscholen in Ferwerderadiel
krijgen deze week van de gemeente een Fries woordenboek. Met het project
'Jou in bern in boek' ('Geef een kind een boek') wil de gemeente het
lezen van Friese boeken onder kinderen bevorderen. Leerlingen van
basisschool 'Op Streek' uit Ferwert krijgen donderdag het boek 'Myn
earste Fryske Van Dale' als eerste uitgereikt in de bibliotheek in
Hallum.
