I've just looked up English ' dwindle' which , it seemed to me, must be
connected
from OE dwinan to waste away = (m) LG , MDu dwinen, ON dvina
So does the 'ver-' in front mean ' utterly/totally' in order to make it from
wasting away to disappearing?

PS Love Jonny's stone story! How tragic to lose it so soon! I'd be back
immediately to buy more from the same source or ask the farmer to fieldwalk
to look for more. I am scanning the molehills in my orchard since finding 2
pieces of medieval pottery turn up roughly in the same area some months
apart on two different molehills. Both are covered in a greeny glaze and
probably date from 13-14th century!!!!! V exciting. I have also found a
small piece of shaped lead like a flat rivet - but being lead would be
useless as such. I still don;t know what it is!
