Subject: LL-L Traditions - Events

I guess the second largest public event, after carnaval, in both Limburgish
Provinces is the annual shooting competition the *OLS*.:

Normally it is a competition between circles from both Limburg provinces.

This year the *European Contest* will be held in Belgian Limburg next
week-end.

It continuous somehow the traditions of the old "civic guard" system, turned
into a folkloric event.

About the weapon, quote (in Dutch):
Geschoten wordt met een zogeheten ‘*zware buks’*. Dit wapen is in de vorige
eeuw speciaal voor de schutterij ontwikkeld. De naam heeft het geweer te
danken aan het feit dat dit ca. 15 kg. Weegt. Geschoten wordt met eigen
gemaakte kogels, kaliber 12 tot 16 mm. Door zijn gewicht, moet de buks
worden ondersteund met een ‘oplegpaal’. Met gespreide benen gaat de
schutters vervolgens als het ware ‘in de buks hangen’. Eén hand aan de
trekker, de andere bovenop het geweer. Kijkend door de diopter, houdt hij
het bölke in het centrum van de ringkorrel die vooraan op de loop is
gemonteerd. Ziet hij rondom het blokje overal evenveel ‘licht’, houdt hij
zijn lichaam stil en is hij volledig geconcentreerd, dan zal de schutter
waarschijnlijk niet missen. Waarschijnlijk, want over een afstand van ca. 20
meter van buks tot bölke, kan veel mis gaan. Een verschuiving van één
millimeter in het vizier, leidt bovenin de hark tot een afwijking, die
gemakkelijk groot genoeg is om het bölke helemaal of half te missen. Over en
uit.
