Aha! Thus it’s related to the word “axillary” as in “axillary hair” and
“axillary nerve.”

Beste Ron,

You wrote:

Now obsolete English "assel(e)" (armpit) comes from Old (Norman?) French
essele (= Modern French aiselle; cf. Latin axilla ("little axle").

The same word did survive in its form "aisle": passage between rows of seats
< wing of a church < wing, upper arm, armpit (~ Latin axilla).
Some Dutch dialects (Groningen, Stellingwerven, de Meierij in Noord-Brabant)
are using the word "oksel" also for the back of a knee. Avestan has the word
"ašayā" for "belonging to both axes".

Kind greetings,

Good ones, Kevin and Luc! Thanks!

Here's just a quick correction of typos in my last posting:

cf. Latin *axis*, Lithuanian *aszis*, Greek άξων *áxon*, Sanskrit आक्श *
ākśa*.

Make that Sanskrit अक्ष *āk**şa*.
