My suggestion: spend your vacations in Mexico this year! It's a lovely
country with lovely people, and what you read and hear is overblown.

Someone once told me that you are less likely to get hassled in Latin
America than in muslim countries, but more likely to get your throat cut
(although admittedly that was before 9/11).

Unfortunately our Foreign Office has issued advice against all but
"essential" travel to Mexico, which means any travel insurance we have would
be void.  They'll probably lift it soon as they don't like to interfere with
travel more than they have to.

I second that suggestion ... though i MAY not make it this year! (MAY be
heading for the Horn of Africa instead... fingers crossed and re-crossed ...
and hoping NOT to be double-crossed!)

We all have our favorites ... mine happens to be the Yucatan (centering
around Merida NOT Cancun!) ...

And, ONE of the extra pluses is still being able to rent a (beat-up) old VW
bug JUST LIKE the one you learned to drive on (in my case, my elder
brother's) all those years ago ... ahhh, nostalgia!
