Thanks, Dan and Ron. I had wondered about that exact thing. In my own
rather part-time amateur theorizing, I reckoned that Slavic influences might
account for some of it. I wrote a paper in one of my linguistics classes
about Romanian, and I remember that it has significant borrowing from Slavic
languages it had contact with.

Mark, Dan, we also ought to consider longstanding contacts of Romanian with
Hungarian, a non-Indo-European language.
While all this is non-Lowlandic, the principles at work are relevant.
