Der strenge Winter 2010 hat vielen Menschen

Dear Lowlanders,

Although she herself suggested "Culture", our Hanne inadvertently introduced
a new feature that I think is an interesting idea. I call it "Places" as a
category of posts. It is the introduction of Lowlands or Lowlands-relevant
places that are particularly interesting for whatever reasons. Some of you
might like to pick up on this idea. If yours are in English or can be
accompanied by English versions, please consider to "donate" them to our
Travels project
(http://lowlands-l.net/travels/).

Thanks for the idea, Hanne!

In this case, Hanne introduces the Baltic Sea Island of Hiddensee. Located
west of the Isle of Rugia (Rügen, Germany's largest island) in what used to
be East German territory, Hiddensee has been a tourist destination for
generations. It's earliest known culture and language is Western Slavic
(specifically Ranian), though there seem to have been some Eastern Germanic
settlements prior to the 6th century. Germanic eastward expansion in the
Middle Ages eventually led to Low Saxon culture and language with Slavic
substrata, which is typical of the area east of Central Holstein. The island
was once under Danish rule in the Middle Ages, and its modern name is of
Danish origin: "Hedin's Island" - Hedinsey, until the late 19th century
still known as Hiddensjö, though it has been renamed Hiddensee in Modern
Danish. The Polish name of the island is Chycina or Hycina. From 1648 unti
1815, the island was under Swedish rule.

The feature of *Bodden* is often mention in connection with islands off the
southern Baltic Sea coast. Definition in the *Wikipedia*:

*Bodden* are brackish bodies of water similar to estuaries, occurring along
the southern shores of the Baltic Sea and having a distinctive geological
origin.

Aside from having been a tourist destination for a long time, partly because
of its physical beauty and relatively many hours of sunshine, and partly
because of its cultural charm, Hiddensee used to be and may well become
again a favorite hangout of famous and want-to-be famous artists, writers
and entertainers, many of whom had second homes or summer homes on
Hiddensee. My own maternal grand-uncle, apparently a man with artistic
ambitions, lived on the island for much of his life and died there when I
was a child.
