On a similar theme, any ideas why the name of a fast-flying bird should be
the sames as or similar to the word for taking food or water down the
throat?



I always assumed that it was an accidental convergence of two different
words - but then I found that in Mandarin Chinese, the bird and the throat
movement are again very similar (can't remember the Chinese words offhand).
 Does anybody know any other examples?



Obviously swallows must swallow things, but presumably so does just about
anything with a throat?
