Can I ask about the possible Lowlands origin of yet another word that has
turned up in our local studies.
We are transcribing / translating a rental for a local estate c 1359 which
contains the following as a field / place name

Colwedereshull

I take it that the mostly likely menaing of - hull = hill

It is just possible that the Col- also refers to 'hill'

But it is the middle element that I would welcome comment on '-wederes -

Does this ring any kind of bell with anyone?

Is it just co-incidence that a local family who appear on tax lists c 1400
are named " Muriweder" (by the 17th century the name has evolved into
Merriweather)

Does 'weder' have a known origin. I'd be very very grateful for comments.

many thanks

Heather

Subject: Etymology

Hi, Heather!

I wonder with this “weder” is related to Low Saxon *Wedder(n)* ~
*Wetter(n)*denoting a drainage ditch in marsh or swamp land. German
borrowed it as
*Wetter*.
