>Of course, the assertion that some speakers use 'gied' for both preterite
and past participle is impossible to disprove. But I'm pretty certain that
'gave' for both is by far the most common 'development' from the traditional
'gied' and 'gien
I know it's traditionally 'gie' – 'gied' – 'gien' but I am familiar the
convergent past tense 'gien' and likely use it myself. The convergent past
tense 'gied' seems strange to me. 'Gie' may also be 'gae' for some speakers
in both present and the preterite, also preterite 'gaed', and past
participle 'gaen'. Arguably 'gae', 'gaed' and 'gaen' just represent
different realisations of 'gie', 'gied' and 'gien'.
