Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2011.08.02 (02) [NL]
from Heather Rendall heatherrendall at tiscali.co.uk
re hovel being a diminutive form of 'hof'
I do like this idea; especially as those buildings designated 'hovel'
are often those erected under squatters' rights on waste land where so
long as you have a fence around and smoke up the chimney within 24
hours, you cannot be shifted. We have several buildings marked on old
maps like this - either taken out of the waste / roadway or the
common. And bar one they are all called 'hovel' or 'hole' and I am
very happy to accept 'hole' as a dialect form of 'hovel'

PS Thanks also for the excellent hint re hullan appearing in other A/S
charters. I was able to go online and find copy of both it and its
translation. There are two versions 'hullan crundel' and hullan
geroundel' meaning crown of the hill.
