Subject: Resources

Richard Tames, *Shakespeare’s London on 5 Groats a Day *(with 82
illustrations, 16* *in color), London (UK) & New York: Thames & Hudson,
2009; CND$17.52, US$14.21, EUR 14.19, £10.39.

Look no farther if you are in search of a read that is as much fun as it is
edifying! This is the perfect gift for anyone interested in time travel,
anyone that delights in learning about life in Elizabethan London, or
England by and large.

The volume is presented as though it belonged to the well-known serial
guides to budget travel. The would-be visitor is taken on numerous tours in
and around London in the late 16th century. The descriptions are highly
engaging without being ridiculing, and all of them contain oftentimes very
detailed historical and cultural facts.

The reader learns about the city’s various neighborhoods and markets, their
populations and opportunities for entertainment and shopping. There are
plenty of warnings about less than law-abiding folks should the visitor
consider venturing to crowded places or to certain neighborhoods at various
times of day or night. The would-be visitor is instructed about tips and
about dealing with street entertainers, cut-purses, pickpockets and
confidence tricksters. Descriptions of typical tourist destinations come
with fee and tip information. The reader learns about various types of
eateries and lodging, anywhere from palatial mansions to the most notorious
“stews” (i.e., brothels, originally named after bathhouses). The reader
learns about London’s fashions with regard to etiquette and attire. There
are detailed introductions to food and entertainment, with a good deal of
information about music, dance and theater.

And all the amusement London has to offer receives somber reverberations
from the Fair City’s Puritan Populace.

London’s language of the day receives considerable coverage, not only
official terminology but jargon as well.

The good guide does not ignore London’s foreign-rooted populations. Not
only are there French, Italian and Spanish Londoners, but there are a good
few of African descent as well. Most prominently, there are the “Dotche,”
namely those from the Netherlands and (Northern?) Germany. Why, the
Sovereign Lady (Queen Elizabeth I) herself commands not only Latin, French,
Italian and Spanish, but She has a good deal of comprehension in “Dotche”
as well. Should the visitor require a cleansing and resetting of his
ruffle<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruffle>,
he is best advised to seek the service of a “Dotche” lady.

Though it had been off-limits to Jews for some time, London and England of
that age, like Amsterdam, Emden and Hamburg, had welcomed Jewish refugees
from the Iberian Inquisition. This particular reader would have welcomed
some mention of this population of immigrants.

This volume is not only richly illustrated, nay, it is interspersed with
plentiful quotations and helpful vignettes to enrich the readers
discernment.

Whether as a stocking stuffer, as an amicable token or as a gift to one’s
very own gratification, this book ought to be considered by all Lowlanders
and their admirers.
