Ron wrote with regards to those of us who studied Spanish in high
school (etc) in the US:

Yes, though sometimes to the amusement of the natives... Maybe these
days and maybe in the SW where the numbers of native Spanish speakers
is greater, a more New World variety of Spanish is taught/learned, but
hace muchos años when I was in high school in central Illinois (the
so-called midwest, but actually east of the Mississippi) we were
actually taught a more Quixotic Spanish... and I think it may have
been at least 35 years later when I took the opportunity of hitching a
ride on a tour bus crossing over from Val d'Aran to Lourdes did I
actually use (or hear) the 2nd person plural vosotros forms... (though
I had used the S American vos forms, which we were most definitely NOT
exposed to.)

"Too often we honor swagger and bluster and wielders of force; too often we
excuse those who are willing to build their own lives on the shattered
dreams of others. ... [T]here is another kind of violence, slower but just
as deadly destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the
violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay." (Bobby
Kennedy, 5 April 1968)

Dear LowLanders,
Piet Bult
