Subject: [LLL] Dialect contimuum
Hi all,
A friend was searching around for the Lord's Prayer in different languages
and he discovered this video of a gentleman reading the Lord's Prayer in
Hochdeutsch, Luxemburgish and "Platdeutsch". My question is this: Where is
this dialect of Plat spoken? How does the translation sound? He postscripted
this recording with the fact that the plat translation isn't faithful to the
original Greek.
Cheers,

Hi, Ben!
My take is that his pronunciation in all three varieties is iffy. There are
too many "iffinesses" to name them all.
For instance, he pronounces *hochdeutsch* as [ˈhɔxdoɪʧ] instead of correct
[ˈhoːxdɔɪʧ].
He may have never heard Low German (Low Saxon) pronounced before. Among the
most striking errors are ...
(1) pronouncing syllable-final -r
(2) inconsistent pronunciation of long a as [ɒː] and [aː]
