Subject: Lexicon
Dear Lowlanders,
Tonight, on North German TV, I found out that the "Wadden Sea" of North
Germany's (Schleswig-Holstein's, Hamburg's, and Lower Saxony's) North Sea
coast as well as of the coast of the Northern Netherlands has just been
declared a world heritage site, and that Denmark's part of this band of
North Sea coasts is expected to follow soon.
West Frisian: Waadsee
East (Sater) Frisian: Wäädsee
North Frisian: Waas (< *waað(see))
Dutch: Waddenzee
Low Saxon (Netherlands): Waddenzee
Low Saxon (Germany): Waddensee
German: Wattenmeer
Danish: Vadehavet
Frisian *waad, Wääd, waas*, Dutch *wad*, Low Saxon *wad, Wadd *(*Watt*), and
Danish *vade* are said to mean "mud flat" (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadden_Sea). So much for the etymology.
I used to translate the specific names listed above as "tide flats" (e.g.,
"Tide Flats North Frisian" for a special dialect). It denotes sea floor from
which water recedes during low tide. There are such places in other parts of
the world, and they are usually referred to as "tide flats."
Or is there a difference between them and the so-called "Wadden Sea"?
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
Seattle, USA
P.S.: Most languages borrow the Dutch name *wad*, the "German" word
*Watt*or the Danish word
* vade** *in referring to the said North Sea region (whichever of these
languages they have the closest connection). Portuguese and Castilian
(Spanish) are more inventive (or more familiar?) in calling the region *mar
Frisio* (Frisian Sea) and *mar de Frisia* (Frisian Sea) respectively.
