Het woord is aan het Oudfrans ontleend als gué, wez 'ondiepe plaats,
doorwaadbare plaats', deels met adaptatie van w- als g(u)-. Cognaten:
Oudhoogduits  wat  ‘doorwaadbare plaats’, Oudfries vgl. unwadde, unwedde
‘ondoorwaadbaar’.
Tide/Tidal flats is - in de naam althans - afhankelijk van het getijde
(eb/vloed) of het een doorwaadbare plaats (een wad) is en het wil per
definitie dus niet zeggen dat mudflats altijd doorwaardbaar zijn.
