=====
Viennese German is an East Middle Bavarian dialect, which has borrowed
words from Czech, Italian, Latin, Hungarian, French, and Yiddish. It is a
rich dialect, having an elevated style spoken at the Court of the Habsburgs
and by the nobles (Schönbrunner Wienerisch) as well as an every-day style
used by tradesmen and less savoury characters for thier tools and
activities.
Hans Werner Sokop’s translation—the first ever in Viennese German—is part
of a tradition of dialect writing which includes the famous poets Josef
Weinheber and H. C. Artmann. Sokop has also translated Max und Moritz, The
Struwwelpeter, and The Little Prince into Viennese German, as well as The
Divine Comedy into Standard German.
I am delighted to add Hans Werner Sokop’s Viennese German translation to my
Carrollian collection’s other German dialect translations, including
Reinhard Hahn’s Low German, Jack Thiessen’s Mennonite Low German, and Franz
Schlosser’s forthcoming Palatine German translation.
