The image of Spanish here in an Arizona town is not good among some
elements of the population since it is associated with poverty. Even
nowadays in school many children come with the idea that even the word
Mexican is a kind of epithet. In the past, many Hispanics would not speak
the language. There has been a lot more pride in the language and culture
of late but old attitudes die hard. Teaching Spanish, the by far most
commonly taught foreign language in the U.S., to children who have been
raised to despise it is difficult. How much do you have to like the people
whose language you are learning in order to learn it?
