How interesing that Hanne should include
mummen = undeutlich murmeln.

 as the OED has 'mutterer' as the XVth century alternative to Mummer
i.e. a dumb show player

It too links the word to MLG mummen = a mask  but I wonder which came
first:-

a dumb show with masked characters  acting out in front of audiences
who might not have spoken a common language

and from there to a masked character   and then onto   anyone masked

Cetainly linked says the OED, to OF momeur - an actor in a dumbshow

but it adds that the relative chronology of this group is obscure.

Which came first: the mask or the dumb show
