Richley,
   I think Galen's idea of a possible scribo interpretation sounds more
likely than the semantic implications of 'mazanelhuatl'.  Kurzweil errors
weren't new to the 20th century.
   The semantic extension of 'nelhuatl' seems to be in area of "origin"
rather than "strength".  Here are some examples pulled from the
