xitomatl

If its any help, the Diccionario del náhuatl en el español de México gives the origin of jitomate as the word xictomatl:
p. 73... Xic-tómatl. De xictli, ombligo, tómatl, tomate.
Tomate would refer to the little green fruit (Physalis philadelphica), sometimes called tomatillo, although what the connection is, I have no idea.
