Dear connoisseurs of nominal classification,

my name is Sebastian Fedden. I am a research fellow at the Surrey Morphology Group, where I'm currently working on the AHRC Project: Combining Gender and Classifiers in Natural Language (grant AH/K003194/1) with Greville Corbett, Dunstan Brown and Matthew Baerman. In this project we investigate languages which combine gender and classifiers, their typology and how the two systems interact in assignment of gender or class and in reference tracking in discourse. I was the main organizer of the Surrey workshop "Gender and classifiers: Cross-linguistic perspectives" in January.

My interest in nominal classification and categorization more general goes back to my days as a student when I was lucky enough to attend one of Gunter Senft (see his earlier email) seminars on nominal classification. In the following years, still a student, I worked on gender and verbal classifiers (as in Navajo or Cherokee), until my PhD project in Melbourne brought me into contact with a language which had both gender and a second system which has properties of gender and properties of classifier systems. I have described both in detail in my 2011 grammar of Mian, published by De Gruyter Mouton. Needless to say, Mian is a key language in our current project.

Best,
Sebastian
