donnera une conférence intitulée "Pragmatic interpretation: Inferring from
content to context" le lundi  10 mai de 14h à 16h  à l'Institut d'Histoire
et de Philosophie des Sciences (13 rue du Four, Paris 6, M° Mabillon).

Pragmatic interpretation: Inferring from content to context

Abstract: We infer more from the use of a sentence than what we
explicitly say with it. We can convey this extra information on the
mutual assumption that what we say is appropriate and relevant. This
extra information concerns features of the context: what the speaker
knows, what she presupposes and takes to be relevant, and what she
wants to be the case. Using techniques from game theory and
non-monotonic logic, I give a partial implementation of this Gricean
`inference-to-context' process, and use it for the analysis of some
conversational implicatures. I will also show how this reasoning is
related to the semantic analysis of `only'.
