Language specificity in event construal

RESUME
Cross-linguistic studies of event time structures which include Semitic
(Algerian Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic), Germanic (English, German,
Dutch, Norwegian), and Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish)
reveal language-specific effects in the way events are construed,
showing that the underlying principles are both perspective driven and
linked to patterns of grammaticisation. In the talk I will take a closer
look at three of these languages (English, German, Dutch) which differ
with respect to the coding of grammatical aspect. Using short scenes as
stimulus material, the study covers both verbal and non-verbal tasks in
the processing of event-related scenes. The data will be analysed with
respect to
- cross-linguistic differences in the verbalisation of end points and
other types of event boundaries
- cross-linguistic differences in expressing the contrast specific
versus generic
- language related differences in speech onset times
- eye movement when processing the visual input for verbalisation
The results can be taken as manifestations of language-specific patterns
of event construal which are grammatically determined. Contrasts
manifested in linguistic form can be linked to differences in the
processing of information for verbalisation at a pre-verbal stage. The
findings will be related to current discussions on the role of
language-specific processes in conceptualisation.
